Design & Inspiration

There is a particular authority that a well-proportioned bombé commode brings to a room. Its swelling, outward-curving sides — the defining silhouette of the Louis XV Rococo tradition — give it a visual weight that reads as permanent, as if it has always belonged exactly where it stands. This piece draws directly from the French cabinetmaking tradition of the mid-eighteenth century, when the ateliers of Paris produced furniture that treated every surface as an opportunity for ornament. The two-door configuration opens to reveal two interior shelves, making this as functional as it is ceremonial.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity, ensuring dimensional stability in varied climates. The exterior surfaces are veneered in book-matched cherry wood panels that form a herringbone chevron on the central apron — a classic marquetry technique that brings movement and depth to an otherwise flat surface. The French polish finish, applied by hand in multiple sessions, gives the wood its characteristic warm, glowing depth. Crowning the piece is a slab of warm brown veined marble, shaped to follow the bombé curve of the carcass and finished with a chamfered edge.

Dimensions & Details

The two doors are faced with a raised diamond-lattice panel — a red-ground trellis pattern with brass bead accents — framed by shaped cartouche borders in antique gold brass. Gilt bronze mounts appear at every structural and decorative junction: the crest, the door surrounds, the apron scrollwork, the knees of the cabriole legs, and the sabots at the feet. Each mount is cast, chased, and applied individually, in the manner of the original French ébénistes who understood that bronze hardware was not decoration — it was the punctuation of the design. The cabriole legs taper to cast brass sabots, completing the characteristic Louis XV silhouette.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every element of this commode is produced by hand in our Egyptian workshop, where craftsmen trained in the European cabinetmaking tradition work from period reference drawings and original hardware templates. The result is a faithful interpretation of a mid-eighteenth century Parisian commode — built for modern durability, finished to the standard of the originals it honours. Customisation of marble colour, brass finish, and upholstery is available on request.
