Design & Inspiration

Place this commode against a panelled wall and the room arranges itself around it. The swelling bombé form — that distinctive outward curve at the sides and front — was the signature silhouette of the Louis XV cabinetmaker's art, and here it arrives in full Rococo confidence: ivory-lacquered ground, an intricate lattice of gilt brass rocaille mounts spreading across every surface like the ornamental language of a Parisian hôtel particulier. Two generously proportioned drawers sit behind this theatre of ornament, accessible through cast brass drop-ring handles of foliate design. The slender cabriole legs, finishing in scrolled brass sabots, complete a piece that knows exactly what it is — and carries that knowledge lightly.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is constructed from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity, ensuring dimensional stability in any climate. The surface receives a smooth ivory lacquer finish, hand-applied in successive coats and rubbed to a refined, even sheen. The brass mounts — the true centrepiece of this commode — are individually cast and hand-chased: the central cartouche with its acanthus sprays and mascaron crest, the sinuous C-scroll borders framing each drawer face, the corner escutcheons, and the delicate twisted-rope gilded bead running along the stile between the two drawers. Each element is finished in a warm, bright gold that reads as polished without being brash. The cabinetry joinery is dovetailed for longevity; the drawer slides are fitted for smooth, quiet operation.

Dimensions & Details

Two full-width drawers provide practical storage — useful in a bedroom, hallway, or salon — while the proportions remain true to the 18th-century French commode tradition: wide enough to anchor a wall, compact enough not to overwhelm a room. The gilt bead moulding along the top edge echoes the leg detail and ties the design into a coherent whole. Dimensions are available upon request; custom sizing is offered.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every piece in the Brass & Wood collection is handcrafted in Egypt by artisans trained in classical European joinery and gilding techniques. The rocaille mounts are cast and finished in our workshop, ensuring the quality of the metalwork matches the precision of the woodwork. This commode ships fully assembled except for the legs, which attach with a minimal tool-free fitting. Production time is 45–60 days from order confirmation, with worldwide delivery available.
