Design & Inspiration

Place this commode against any wall and the room reorganizes itself around it. The bombé silhouette — that outward swell of the case that peaks at the lower drawer and tapers gracefully into four slender cabriole legs — is one of the most technically demanding forms in the history of European cabinetmaking. It was developed in France during the reign of Louis XV, when Rococo designers rejected the straight line as insufficiently alive. Every surface here moves: the front swells, the sides curve, and the shaped beige marble top echoes the serpentine plan below it. This is a piece that earns its place in the room through presence, not ornament alone.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity — a specification that prevents the warping and joint failure that plague lesser furniture in Egypt's climate. The high-gloss walnut-tone lacquer finish deepens the natural figuring of the wood, creating the warm amber-brown ground against which the gilt bronze mounts read with maximum contrast. The three drawer interiors are lined in deep burgundy fabric, a detail drawn directly from 18th-century French practice, where the hidden surfaces were finished with as much care as the visible ones. The beige marble top is shaped to follow the serpentine front — a custom cut that requires hand-fitting to each individual carcass.

Dimensions & Details

The commode carries three drawers: two narrow drawers in the upper tier flanking a central cartouche-shaped pull, and one broad drawer below. The drawer fronts are not flat — each follows the bombé curve of the case, which means every drawer front is a unique shaped panel. The cabriole legs terminate in gilt sabots (bronze toe caps), and the leg knees are accented with foliate bronze mounts. The corners of the case carry vertical bronze gadroon strips that both protect the edges and articulate the transition from front to side. Please note: exact dimensions are available on request — contact our team for a technical sheet.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every commode in this collection is handcrafted in Egypt by craftsmen trained in the European classical tradition. The bombé form requires bending and fitting solid wood panels to compound curves — work that cannot be replicated by machine. The gilt bronze mounts are cast individually and hand-chased before fitting, following the same process used in 18th-century Parisian workshops. Brass & Wood brings this level of craft to a modern commission, with the added benefit of customization: wood tone, marble selection, and brass finish can all be specified to suit your interior.
