Design & Inspiration

Place this commode in a room and something shifts — the eye is drawn immediately to the swell of its bombé silhouette, that signature outward curve at the sides and front that defined the most refined French cabinetmaking of the mid-eighteenth century. This is a faithful interpretation of the Louis XV commode at its most ambitious: three drawer fronts that billow forward like a gathered sail, four slender cabriole legs with gilt sabots, and a profile that has no straight line below the marble top. Every proportion was studied from the great French ébénistes who worked for Versailles.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity — the foundation of dimensional stability across varying climates. Over this, matched chevron (herringbone) veneer panels are laid with precision, the grain lines meeting at a central diamond point on the drawer faces and continuing in a diagonal flow across the sides. The surface is finished to a deep French polish, allowing the warm walnut tones to glow with depth rather than sit flat. The marble top — in brown-veined stone with a characteristic complexity of markings — sits in a shaped gallery that follows the serpentine plan of the case below it.

Dimensions & Details

The gilt bronze ormolu mounts are cast and hand-chased across every surface: foliate cartouche escutcheons at each keyhole, scrolling acanthus drawer pulls of substantial weight, and full-height corner mounts that flow from the marble gallery down through the apron in a single unbroken composition. The cabriole legs terminate in cast gilt sabots, completing the vertical rhythm. Three lockable drawers offer generous storage with the visual discretion that only a well-proportioned bombé front can provide.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every piece bearing the Brass & Wood name is made by hand in Egypt by craftsmen who have trained in both traditional European joinery techniques and classical carving. The ormolu mounts are cast in brass, hand-finished, and applied individually. The veneer work is executed by hand, with each panel cut and fitted to follow the compound curves of the bombé form — a task that separates an artisan from a machine. This is a replica made with the same intention as the originals: to endure.
