This solid wood plant holder — square in plan, open at the top — draws on the Renaissance Revival vocabulary that swept the decorative arts of the 1860s–1890s: dense, interlaced scrollwork friezes derived from Italian rinceaux and Northern European grotesque ornament, rendered here in full relief and pierced right through the panel. The natural warm honey tone of the wood only deepens the visual contrast between the smooth-grained upper body and the turbulent, shadowed frieze below.

Crafted from Romanian solid redwood with a humidity content below 10%, this piece begins as a precisely joined square form — four panels assembled with tight corner joinery — before the artisan's chisels define the central frieze. The carving band wraps all four sides without interruption, each corner handled with a confident butt join that allows the pattern to turn cleanly. The scrollwork is fully pierced: light passes through the interleaved C-scrolls, foliate tendrils, and central acanthus medallion, creating a lantern-like effect when the piece is backlit. The surfaces are finished to a warm natural lacquer that protects the grain without masking it.
