Drawing directly from the grandeur of Napoleonic France, this oval coffee table embodies the Empire style at its most refined. The sweeping oval form — a hallmark of early 19th-century salon furniture — is crowned by a radiant burl-wood surface evoking the richly grained pieces favoured by the French Imperial court. At its centre, a delicate ivory-inlaid laurel wreath pays homage to the classical Roman symbolism that defined the Empire aesthetic, framed by double stringing lines in pale wood for perfect geometric balance.
The tabletop is veneered in matched burl walnut, hand-polished to a deep mirror lacquer that amplifies the wood's dramatic figuring. The apron is adorned with a continuous cast-brass ormolu frieze of anthemion and palmette motifs, finished in 24-karat gold leaf by Brass & Wood artisans. Ebonised solid-wood legs taper elegantly to acanthus-leaf brass caps, while square gilt-bronze cartouche mounts anchor each leg head to the apron with architectural precision. A curved stretcher in ebonised wood unifies the base, its understated form balancing the opulence above.
Every element of this table is handcrafted in the Brass & Wood atelier in Egypt. Marquetry cutters shape each ivory-toned inlay by hand; brass founders cast and chase every ormolu mount individually; and gilders apply gold leaf in successive layers before burnishing to the characteristic Empire brilliance. The result is a piece indistinguishable from a museum-quality 19th-century original.
