There is a moment when a side table stops being furniture and becomes a statement — this Napoleon III guéridon is precisely that moment. The circular top, richly worked with polychrome floral marquetry arranged in a cruciform medallion composition, commands attention from the first glance. Around it, a deep apron encircled with repoussé antique-gold ormolu rosette plaques turns what could be a simple surface into a complete work of decorative art. This is the Napoleon III spirit in its most confident form: nothing left unadorned, nothing left to chance.
The top surface combines a light marble inset at its center with surrounding panels of hand-laid marquetry — floral scrolls, foliate arabesques, and cartouche reserves worked in contrasting light and dark veneers against the warm medium-brown ground. The deep cylindrical apron is sheathed in a continuous band of cast and chased ormolu, each rosette medallion and palmette carefully applied to the hand-rubbed solid wood substrate. Below, a classically turned baluster pedestal — generous in its proportions and smooth in its surface — descends to a four-arm quadripod platform base, itself inlaid with stringing lines and mounted at each arm terminus and central knot with further acanthus-leaf ormolu mounts. The four scroll feet curl outward with controlled elegance, capped in gilded acanthus sabots.
This guéridon is sized for the role it was historically designed to play: the intermediate table that completes a seating group, holds a lamp or a tray of objects, and provides the punctuation mark a room's composition requires. The quadripod base provides stability while maintaining the visual lightness that distinguishes a fine guéridon from a heavy center table. Every brass mount is individually applied; every marquetry panel is hand-cut and fitted.
Built at the Brass & Wood workshops in Egypt from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity — the threshold that ensures dimensional stability in varied climates — this guéridon is assembled by craftsmen who work in the living tradition of European decorative furniture. The ormolu-style brass mounts are cast, hand-finished, and individually positioned. The marquetry top is assembled by hand, veneer by veneer, in the manner of the original Second Empire workshops of Paris. This is a faithful interpretation of one of the most ornate pedestal table forms the 19th century produced.
The frame and pedestal are crafted from Romanian solid redwood with a hand-rubbed finish. The top features a combination of polychrome wood marquetry and a light marble inset at the center. All decorative mounts are antique-gold-finished brass applied individually to the wood substrate.
Minimal assembly is required — typically attaching the pedestal to the base platform and securing the top. Full instructions are provided. No specialist tools are needed.
