Rooted in the refined elegance of the Louis XVI court, this writing desk — known in French as a bureau plat — captures the neoclassical spirit that swept Versailles in the late 18th century. Symmetrical floral bouquets, trailing ribbons, and delicate scrollwork are inlaid across the entire writing surface in a breathtaking marquetry composition, evoking the grandeur of royal French ateliers.
The desk is constructed from solid hardwood, hand-carved and polished to a deep, lustrous mahogany tone. The top surface is adorned with hand-cut wood marquetry featuring contrasting veneers that form an intricate floral medallion framed by sweeping rocaille borders. Every corner, apron, and leg capital is dressed in hand-cast ormolu bronze mounts — gilded to an authentic antique gold patina — including swag-and-ribbon friezes, acanthus corner mounts, and a central cartouche drawer pull. Tapered, fluted legs terminate in delicate brass sabots.
Each piece is individually handcrafted by Brass & Wood master artisans in Egypt, honouring centuries-old European joinery and bronze-casting traditions. The marquetry is assembled piece by piece, the bronzes are hand-chased and finished, and the wood is lacquered in multiple layers for lasting depth and protection.
