Place this table at the centre of a reception hall and the room organises itself around it. The scalloped octagonal silhouette — its twelve lobed edges framed in polished solid wood — creates a formal presence that draws the eye from every approach. Faithfully reproduced in the tradition of Napoleon III Second Empire cabinet-making at its most theatrical peak, this centre table is the kind of piece that once defined the grand salons and winter gardens of Second Empire Paris, where the revival of Rococo ornament was pursued with an intensity that outpaced even the originals.
The table is constructed from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity — a foundation chosen for its dimensional stability and its ability to hold the fine marquetry work applied to the top surface. That top is a composition of richly toned wood veneers arranged in a radiating medallion pattern: a central oval cartouche wreathed in scrolling floral marquetry panels, framed by ebonised diamond banding and separated by gilt cast-brass mount rosettes at four compass points. Each element of the marquetry has been individually cut and laid by hand. The apron is dressed in a continuous frieze of cast gilt-brass acanthus scrollwork — a signature ornamental motif of the Second Empire — running without interruption around all twelve lobed faces. The baluster pedestal below is lathe-turned to a disciplined vase profile, rising from a shaped platform base decorated with matching gilt acanthus mounts and terminating in four scrolled feet with foliate gilt-brass caps.
Dimensions are available on request. The table functions equally as a centre table for a formal salon or as a commanding entry table in a wide hallway or reception vestibule. Its pedestal construction means the floor plane beneath remains unobstructed, which preserves the sense of space while the upper surface commands visual authority. The high-gloss lacquered finish deepens the contrast between the dark redwood ground and the warm gold of the brass mounts — the two materials reading as a deliberate counterpoint across the surface.
Every piece bearing the Brass & Wood name is produced in Egypt by craftsmen trained in classical European joinery and marquetry traditions. The gilt-brass mounts are cast individually and hand-finished before being applied to the wood frame. The marquetry veneers are hand-laid using traditional techniques. This is not reproduction furniture produced by machine tolerance — it is handcrafted work that carries the particular character of the maker's hand at every stage. Customisation of dimensions, finish tone, and brass colour is available on request.
The frame and pedestal are constructed from Romanian solid redwood (under 10% humidity). The top surface features hand-laid marquetry wood veneers. All decorative mounts and the apron frieze are cast gilt brass, finished by hand.
Minimal assembly is required — the pedestal and top ship separately and connect with a single central fixing. No specialist tools are needed.
