Set this table in the center of a room and it immediately reorganizes the space around itself. The deep ebonized ground — black as lacquered iron — throws the gilt bronze mounts into sharp relief, while thirteen hand-painted porcelain medallions catch the eye one after another, drawing you close enough to read each pastoral scene. This is the Napoleon III guéridon at its most ambitious: not merely a table, but a portable gallery of painted porcelain and sculptural metalwork, faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the great Parisian ateliers of the Second Empire.
The circular top is the defining statement. A large central medallion, painted in the Sèvres manner with an aristocratic figural scene, is ringed by twelve smaller portrait and pastoral roundels, each framed in individual gilt bronze bezels connected by a continuous wreath of acanthus and rocaille ornament. The apron below continues the decorative program: six further Sèvres-style medallions are mounted at intervals, separated by swaged garlands of gilt bronze husks and ribbons — the unmistakable decorative vocabulary of the Second Empire interior. Three full-figure caryatids in gilt bronze serve as the legs, each draped figure standing with classical composure against the ebonized wood ground. Between them, at the structural center, a cobalt-blue porcelain vase with its own painted oval medallion acts as the column linking the apron to the curved tripartite platform base. The base itself is ebonized and edged in gilt bronze foliate mounts, terminating in claw feet. The body is constructed from Romanian solid redwood finished in a deep lacquered black, sealed to protect the wood and provide the contrast surface that makes the gilt and porcelain sing.
Diameter: 94 cm. Height: 92 cm. These proportions place it comfortably as a salon center table or an entry hall guéridon — commanding enough to anchor a room, compact enough to leave space around it. The round form allows full appreciation from every angle, which is precisely why Napoleon III designers favored the guéridon format for their most elaborately decorated pieces.
Every element of this table is assembled and finished by hand in Egypt by craftsmen trained in classical European reproduction techniques. The porcelain medallions are individually set, the gilt bronze mounts are applied piece by piece, and the lacquered ebonized surface is built up in multiple coats and hand-polished to its final depth. Brass & Wood produces this piece in limited runs, and customization of finish, medallion selection, or base configuration is available on request.
The frame is Romanian solid redwood with a lacquered ebonized finish. The ornamental mounts are gilt bronze. The decorative medallions on the top and apron are hand-painted porcelain in the Sèvres tradition. The central column urn is cobalt-glazed porcelain with gilt bronze mounts.
Minimal assembly is required — the legs and base platform are secured on delivery. No specialist tools are needed.
