Description

Design & Inspiration

Place this vitrine in a corner of a salon and something shifts in the room — a warm reddish-brown column of carving, glass, and gilded ornament that draws the eye upward and inward at the same time. Inspired by the flowering of decorative arts during the Belle Époque (1871–1914), this handcrafted display cabinet faithfully reproduces the era's defining impulse: that every surface worthy of a fine interior should also be a surface worthy of study. The sweeping cabriole legs, the scrolled X-stretcher below, the asymmetric bloom of gilded acanthus across the apron — these are not decorative afterthoughts. They are the grammar of an era that believed ornament and function were inseparable.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is constructed from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity — a material chosen for its dimensional stability and the depth of colour it holds under a hand-rubbed cherry finish. The carving is done in multiple relief layers: the floral garland draped across the cornice and the acanthus scrolls flanking the apron are shaped by hand, then finished with selective antique-gold gilding that allows the warm wood tone to show through in the recesses. The single-door glass panel is framed within a shaped and moulded surround, with a small brass knob and lock hardware in antique gold. The interior back panel is mirror-faced, doubling the visual depth of whatever is displayed inside — porcelain, crystal, or a curated collection of precious objects.

Dimensions & Details

The vitrine sits on four elegantly curved cabriole legs joined by a shaped cross-stretcher at the base, itself ornamented with gilded acanthus at the intersection. The cabinet body rises on this open stand, giving the piece an airy silhouette despite its richly carved surfaces. The cornice is arched and scrolled, crowned by a knotted floral wreath in high relief — the single most distinctive element of this piece and a signature motif of Belle Époque decorative vocabulary. Dimensions are available on request; the piece is produced to order by the artisan workshop of Brass & Wood in Egypt.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every vitrine bearing the Brass & Wood name is produced in our Egyptian workshop by craftsmen trained in classical European joinery and decorative carving. The gilding is applied by hand using traditional techniques, the glass is fitted and secured by hand, and the hand-rubbed finish is built up in multiple stages to achieve the depth of colour visible in these images. This is a replica in the proudest sense: a faithful interpretation of a historical design, made with the same dedication to craft that defined the original era.
