Description

Design & Inspiration

Place this commode in a room and the room organizes itself around it. The central marquetry panel — a lyre-urn flanked by torches, laurel branches, and cascading blooms — commands the eye the way a painting commands a wall. Around it, two wings of diamond-cube parquetry fan outward, each triangle cut and set by hand to create the illusion of three-dimensional tessellation. This is a faithful interpretation of the grand commode à vantaux tradition of late-eighteenth-century Paris, drawing directly from the design vocabulary of the Louis XVI Neoclassical ateliers that transformed French cabinetmaking after the excesses of Rococo.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to below ten percent humidity — a standard that prevents the seasonal movement that cracks lesser marquetry work over time. The veneer surface is a study in contrast: warm mahogany grounds set against the geometric precision of the parquetry panels and the fluid naturalism of the central floral inlay. Every ormolu mount — the scrolling acanthus frieze below the marble, the laurel-leaf base molding, the corner pilasters with their hanging-ribbon drops, and the turned finial feet capped in brass — is cast and chased by hand, then finished in an antique gold patina that deepens rather than shouts. The top is a slab of beige-veined marble, its subtly broken-edge profile matching the shaped front of the case below.

Dimensions & Details

Three drawers run across the frieze, their faces veneered to read as a continuous surface when closed, disrupted only by the discreet ormolu pull hardware. The shaped front — stepping slightly forward at the center — gives the piece the subtle sculptural energy that distinguishes a Louis XVI commode from a simple rectangular cabinet. The turned, tapered legs in carved wood with brass sabots complete the silhouette with Neoclassical restraint.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every component of this commode is produced in the Brass & Wood workshop in Egypt, where master craftsmen trained in classical European joinery and marquetry techniques cut, fit, and finish each piece by hand. The parquetry alone requires hundreds of individually shaped veneer pieces, each fitted with precision before the surface is leveled and French-polished to a satin depth. This is not furniture produced for volume — it is furniture produced for permanence.
