Description

Design & Inspiration

There is a particular confidence to a Louis XV bombé commode — the way its swelling flanks push outward as if the wood itself is exhaling. This piece draws from the golden age of French cabinetmaking, circa 1740–1760, when the ébénistes of Paris perfected the art of the three-dimensional curved case. The dramatic convex bow front, the serpentine outline, and the elegant cabriole legs tapering to acanthus-capped brass sabots all speak the same visual language: movement, rhythm, and controlled extravagance. A masterful interpretation of Rococo's most celebrated case piece, faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the great French royal workshops.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to under 10% humidity — dimensional stability that allows the bold bombé shaping to hold its form across decades. The exterior surfaces are dressed in bookmatched walnut veneer panels arranged in the classic crossbanded quartetto pattern, each drawer front framed by a fine stringing line that sharpens the geometry. The finish is French polish: a hand-applied shellac process built up in thin layers until the grain glows from within rather than sitting behind a surface coating. The gilt brass mounts — drawer pulls, escutcheons, corner chutes, and apron cartouche — are cast and hand-chased, their rocaille scrollwork and acanthus foliage adding depth and weight to every surface they touch. The beige marble top, with its characteristic warm veining, is shaped to follow the serpentine front profile of the case, sitting proud of the frame in the proper French manner.

Dimensions & Details

Four drawers are arranged in the classic Louis XV commode format: two narrow upper drawers flanking a central keyhole cartouche, and two deep lower drawers that carry the full bombé curve. Each drawer runs on hand-fitted wooden runners. The cabriole legs are carved from solid wood with pronounced knee carving that flows naturally into the shaped apron — a single sculpted line from top to sabot. Dimensions are available on request; the piece is proportioned for a generous wall placement above 140 cm in width.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every commode is built by hand in our Cairo workshops by craftsmen trained in the European cabinetmaking tradition. The marquetry veneers are cut and laid by hand. The brass mounts are individually cast, finished, and fitted. The French polish is applied coat by coat over several days. Brass & Wood produces this piece to order, with the option to customize the marble color, brass finish, and wood tone to suit your interior. Delivery takes 45–60 days from order confirmation.
