Set this piece beside a bed or at the end of a hallway and it immediately communicates something about the person who chose it: an eye for proportion, an appreciation for the discipline of ornament. The Louis XV chiffonnier — a tall, narrow chest of drawers developed in the French court workshops of the 1740s — was never merely storage. It was a piece of furniture that performed. This interpretation faithfully reproduces the sinuous serpentine front, the gently outswept cabriole legs ending in cast gilt bronze sabots, and the shaped marble top that gives the silhouette its crown.
The body is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity, veneered in richly striped mahogany and finished with a hand-applied French polish — a technique requiring multiple sessions of shellac burnished to a warm, deep lustre that catches light differently at every angle. Four dovetailed drawers run smoothly on fitted rails, each fronted by a cast ormolu pull of scrolling Rococo foliage. The stiles flanking the drawer stack carry applied gilt bronze panels of stylized wheat-sheaf and laurel — the decorative vocabulary of the Louis XV ébéniste tradition. Legs are delicately shaped cabrioles terminating in cast bronze sabots.
The shaped beige marble top — veined in warm amber and ivory — overhangs the case on a profiled edge, softening the transition between stone and wood. The serpentine front introduces movement into an otherwise vertical form, a hallmark of mature Rococo case furniture. Gilt bronze banding traces the drawer divisions and case perimeter, integrating the ornamental mounts into the overall structure rather than applying them as afterthought decoration. Four drawers provide practical storage without compromising the refined scale of the piece.
Every Brass & Wood chiffonnier is built by hand in Egypt by craftsmen trained in classical European joinery and finishing traditions. The ormolu mounts are cast individually, hand-chased, and lacquered to preserve their warm gold tone. The French polish is applied coat by coat, each layer hand-rubbed before the next is added. This is furniture made the way it was always meant to be made — slowly, deliberately, with attention to every surface the eye will rest upon.
The frame and carcass are built from Romanian solid redwood (dried to below 10% humidity) with a mahogany veneer finish. The top is genuine shaped marble in a beige tone with warm veining. All decorative mounts, pulls, and sabots are cast gilt bronze (ormolu-style), hand-finished and lacquered.
Minimal assembly is required — primarily attaching the marble top and confirming the drawer alignment. Full instructions and fittings are included. No specialist tools are needed.
