There is a moment when a piece of furniture stops being furniture and becomes the axis around which a room organizes itself. This Louis XV Rococo bombé commode creates exactly that moment. Its dramatically curved silhouette — swelling outward at the front and sides in the classic bombé form — draws the eye with the confidence of a piece that knows its own importance. The shaped cream marble top, edged in a gentle serpentine profile, crowns the whole with the cool authority of stone set against warm, luminous wood.
The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood (below 10% humidity), dressed in meticulously laid burl veneer panels that shimmer with the unpredictable figuring only root wood produces — no two pieces alike. Crossbanded borders in straight-cut veneer frame each panel, and the drawer fronts are finished to a deep French polish that gives the wood its characteristic glassy depth. The three drawers — lined in red baize and fitted with sculpted gilt brass bail handles — operate on smooth-running runners with the quiet precision that quality joinery demands.
The gilt brass ormolu mounts are the piece's most expressive element. Acanthus-leaf corner mounts cascade down the stiles; foliate escutcheons guard the keyholes; and the sabots — cast brass feet in the form of scrolled acanthus — anchor the delicate cabriole legs with a flourish that is wholly Rococo in character. Every mount is hand-finished, with the kind of detail that rewards close inspection. The top drawer features a central sunflower rosette mount; the middle drawer carries an asymmetric C-scroll handle composition; and the lower drawer bears a bold cartouche escutcheon that marks the center of the composition.
This commode is handcrafted in Egypt by Brass & Wood artisans trained in the traditions of classical European cabinet-making. The burl veneer is hand-selected, hand-laid, and hand-polished. The brass mounts are individually cast, chased, and gilded. The result is a faithful interpretation of the French Louis XV commode à vantaux tradition — the kind of piece that furnished the private apartments of the Parisian hôtels particuliers — now crafted to bring that same measured grandeur into the contemporary home.
The frame and carcass are built from Romanian solid redwood (below 10% humidity). The exterior surfaces are dressed in hand-laid burl and straight-cut veneer, finished to a deep French polish. The top is shaped cream marble. The hardware is gilt brass, individually cast and hand-finished.
Minimal assembly is required — the marble top is fitted on-site and the legs may be attached on delivery. Full instructions and fittings are included.
