Description

Design & Inspiration

Place this commode in a room and it immediately rearranges the visual hierarchy. The swelling bombé silhouette — that pronounced outward curve across the front and sides — draws the eye before anything else does. This is the defining form of French Rococo case furniture at its most confident, faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the great Parisian ébénistes who supplied the courts of Louis XV. Every surface follows the same governing curve: the drawer fronts bow outward, the sides billow, the serpentine apron flows into four slender cabriole legs finished in gilded sabots. Nothing here is accidental.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood seasoned to below 10% humidity — the structural backbone that keeps joinery tight across decades of seasonal change. Over this, skilled craftsmen have laid a bookmatched parquetry veneer in warm mahogany, the grain chevrons meeting precisely at the center of each drawer front to create a mirror-pattern that catches light from every angle. The high-gloss lacquered finish amplifies the depth of the wood, lending the surface an almost liquid quality. At the top, a shaped brown marble slab — its veining in rose, cream, and warm amber — follows the contoured plan of the case, its serpentine edge echoing the curves below. The marble is set proud of the frame on a profiled edge, as the originals were, rather than simply dropped flat.

Dimensions & Details

Three graduated drawers run the full width of the commode, each fitted with a cast ormolu brass bail handle — the rocaille cartouche escutcheon centered above, scrolling acanthus leaves flanking to either side. The corner mounts, sabots, and apron mounts are all cast brass, chased and burnished to a warm gold tone. This is not applied hardware but structural ornament: the corner mounts reinforce the junction between front and side while simultaneously framing the piece's silhouette. The cabriole legs rise from gilt sabots through an elegant knee carved with additional acanthus scrollwork, maintaining the decorative logic from top to bottom.

Handcrafted in Egypt

At Brass & Wood's workshops in Egypt, each commode is built by hand over a multi-week process. The veneer is cut, matched, and laid by eye; the brass mounts are individually cast, chased, and fitted; the marble top is selected and profiled to shape. This is not factory production — it is the continuation of a workshop tradition that places craft over volume. Customization of marble color, brass finish, and wood tone is available upon request, allowing the commode to be tailored to a specific interior scheme.
