Place this piece on a console table in a well-lit hallway and watch what happens: the diamond-cut emerald glass catches every available beam of light and throws it back into the room in fractured green prisms. The gilt bronze acanthus scrolls — climbing the corners, arching across the base, trailing from the rim handles — complete the picture. This is a room-changer, not simply a plant holder.
Inspired by the most theatrical objects produced during the Napoleon III / Second Empire period (1852–1870), this planter draws from a specific design tradition: the French fashion for combining richly coloured cut glass with elaborately cast gilt bronze mounts, perfected in the workshops of Paris's finest ateliers during the reign of Napoléon III. What distinguishes these pieces from their Louis XV predecessors is the conscious drama — the colour is deeper, the bronze heavier, the cut pattern more assertive. This is Rococo Revival with Parisian confidence.
The vessel is formed from deep emerald green glass cut in an all-over diamond lattice (en losange), a pattern that maximises the refractive brilliance of the glass while lending the cylindrical form a sense of structured precision. The gilt bronze mounts — corner acanthus columns, scrolled rim gallery, arched base supports — are cast and hand-chased, with the leafwork retaining its three-dimensional crispness. The gold finish is warm and consistent, avoiding the harsh brightness of electroplated substitutes. Combined weight: 5.0 kg — substantial enough to sit with authority on any surface.
Height: 44 cm | Width: 35 cm | Depth: 24 cm. The cylindrical glass body accommodates a standard nursery pot or serves as a standalone decorative vessel. The two scroll handles at the rim allow repositioning without touching the glass body directly — a thoughtful functional detail drawn from the original period pieces.
Every mount on this planter is cast, finished, and fitted by hand in Brass & Wood's Egyptian workshop, where craftsmen trained in classical European metalwork techniques produce each piece individually. The glass body is selected for colour consistency and cut clarity before assembly. No two pieces are identical in their minor details — this is the nature and the virtue of genuine handcraft. Customisation of glass colour or bronze finish is available on request.
The body is diamond-cut emerald green glass. The mounts, handles, base feet, and rim gallery are cast gilt brass with a warm gold finish. No plastic components are used.
Yes. The glass vessel can hold a nursery liner pot directly, or can be used with a waterproof insert. It is equally effective as a purely decorative object — for dried botanicals, sculptural stems, or standing alone.
Yes. Brass & Wood offers customisation of the bronze finish (antique gold, silver, bronze) and can explore alternative glass colours for orders. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
