Place this commode in a room and it immediately assumes command of the wall behind it. The swelling bombé form — that characteristic outward curve across both the front and sides — is the unmistakable signature of Louis XV Rococo cabinetmaking at its most confident. Drawing from the design vocabulary of the great French ébénistes of the 1740s and 1750s, this piece faithfully reproduces the drama of the period: a silhouette that seems to breathe, crowned by a slab of white marble whose cool, veined surface sets off the warmth of the gilded woodwork below.
The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood (kiln-dried to below 10% humidity) and finished in a deep French-polished mahogany tone that gives the ground its characteristic luminosity — the surface catches light differently at every angle. Over this, skilled hands have applied gilt floral marquetry scrolling across both drawer faces and the shaped apron: sinuous acanthus tendrils, blooming rosettes, and asymmetric C-scroll cartouches that are the very grammar of the Rococo style. The brass mounts — corner sabots capping each cabriole leg, scrolled frame mounts bordering the drawer faces, and the central apron escutcheon — are cast in gilt brass and hand-finished to complement, not overwhelm, the marquetry beneath.
Two generously proportioned drawers open on smooth runners, providing substantial storage without interrupting the visual flow of the front. The white marble top is shaped to follow the commode's bombé contour, its slightly veined surface providing both a practical working surface and the visual weight that anchors the whole composition. The four cabriole legs, slender at the knee and flaring to scroll feet tipped with gilt brass sabots, give the piece its characteristic sense of poise — heavy in form, light in movement.
Every commode bearing the Brass & Wood name is built by hand in Egypt by craftsmen trained in the European classical tradition. The marquetry is hand-cut and individually inlaid; the brass mounts are hand-cast and individually fitted; the French polish is applied by hand in multiple sessions. This is not factory furniture with applied decoration — it is a faithful interpretation of 18th-century French craftsmanship, made one piece at a time.
The frame is Romanian solid redwood finished in French-polished mahogany. The decorative surface features gilt floral marquetry with hand-cast gilt brass mounts. The top is genuine white marble shaped to the bombé contour of the piece.
Minimal assembly is required — typically attaching the marble top to the carcass. Full instructions and hardware are included.
