Description

Design & Inspiration

Place this piece in a room and it immediately establishes where the eye goes. The chiffonière — a slender, tall-bodied French side cabinet — was a fixture of the chambre de parade and the private salon during the Louis XV Rococo period (1730–1770), when French ébénistes competed to pack the maximum decorative intensity into the smallest possible footprint. This interpretation faithfully reproduces that tradition: every visible surface, from the shaped demilune top to the curved apron between the front legs, is covered in hand-cut floral marquetry. Nothing is left plain.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from Romanian solid redwood (under 10% humidity), chosen for its dimensional stability and its receptivity to the multi-species veneer work laid over it. The marquetry panels are executed in contrasting fruitwood and satinwood veneers, depicting full-blown blooms, trailing stems, and foliate scrolls — the vocabulary of the Louis XV decorative repertoire. A high-gloss lacquer finish deepens the contrast between the warm rosewood-toned ground and the honey-gold inlay, while protecting the veneer surface from daily handling. The four slender cabriole legs terminate in cast antique-gold brass sabots; the three drawer pulls are matching ormolu-style brass in a scrolled foliate pattern. The shaped top rail and apron carry gilded brass banding that frames the marquetry like a picture.

Dimensions & Details

The demilune-shaped top gives this cabinet its characteristic narrow footprint — it sits close to the wall while presenting its full decorated face to the room. Three graduated drawers occupy the front face, each framed by vertical marquetry panels and separated by inlaid banding. The side panels carry large single-stem floral compositions that read clearly from across the room. Cabriole legs sweep outward with a confident curve before tapering to the brass sabots, giving the piece the visual lightness that defines the Louis XV silhouette despite its dense decoration. Weight: 5 kg.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every chiffonière that leaves our Cairo workshop represents dozens of hours of hand cutting, fitting, and finishing. At Brass & Wood, we draw on the ébénisterie traditions of 18th-century Paris and translate them through the hands of Egyptian craftsmen who have spent careers mastering marquetry, gilding, and high-gloss lacquer application. The result is a piece that honors the legacy of Louis XV cabinetmaking without pretending to be something it is not — a faithful, honestly crafted interpretation built to last.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chiffonière and how does it differ from a nightstand?

A chiffonière is a tall, narrow French side cabinet with multiple small drawers, originally designed to hold ribbons, lace, and personal accessories in a lady's chamber. It stands taller and narrower than a typical nightstand, and its decoration is intended to be viewed from all sides. It functions equally well as a bedside cabinet, a hallway accent piece, or a salon side table.

Is assembly required?

Only minimal assembly is needed — the legs are attached and the drawers are fitted at our workshop. The piece arrives nearly complete and ready to place.

Can this piece be customized?

Yes. Brass & Wood offers customization on wood finish tone, brass hardware color, and marquetry pattern variation. Contact our design team to discuss your requirements before ordering.
